  Outside Powers Exacerbate Crisis Through Failed Policies

(Nairobi) - All parties  in the escalating conflict in Somalia  have regularly committed war crimes and other serious abuses during the past year that have contributed to the country’s humanitarian catastrophe, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Human Rights Watch urged the United States, the European Union, and other major international actors to rethink their flawed approaches to the crisis and support efforts to ensure accountability. Overt and covered meetings were held almost in all capitals of the region, between ARS leaders and diplomats these countries. The HQ of the Alliance in Asmara, seat of both Central and Executive Committees, was briefed on a number of these contacts, as dialoguing with International Community is permitted by the Constitution and political program of ARS.

Communiqué of Djibouti Somali peacedeal

1.       The Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) held a second round of meetings of the High Level Committee and the Joint Security Committee in Djibouti from 17 to 21 September 2008. The international community, including the United Nations, diplomats from regional organizations (African Union, European Union, League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Conference) and individual countries, as well as representatives of Somali civil society, attended. 

2.       The two Committees continued their discussions on practical means of implementing the Djibouti Agreement. (more…)

PRESS RELEASE 0021/2008  Nairobi, 23 August 2008 - The UN Special Representative for

Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has deplored the recent killings of innocent victims and the resulting displacement of people in Kismayo.

Somalia Is Facing Humanitarian `Catastrophe,’ Aid Group Says-

(Bloomberg) — Somalia is facing a humanitarian “catastrophe” as an escalating conflict restricts aid agencies’ efforts to provide food and medical supplies, Doctors Without Borders said. Every time we think it can’t get much worse, it does,” Nicolas de Torrente, the Geneva-based charity’s executive director in the U.S., said in a conference call today. “At this point, we feel we’ve reached a new low.”

Somalia: 15 Killed, 60 Wounded As President Returns Home

Interim  Abdullahi Yusuf’s return to the national capital Mogadishu coincided with deadly attacks that killed at least 15 people, witnesses and officials said. Hundreds of Somali and Ethiopian government troops backed by armored trucks were deployed along the road that connects Aden Adde International Airport to Villa Somalia, the presidential palace. Somali crisis ‘worse than Darfur’

The UN says Somalia has one the world’s most challenging aid situations. The number of people in Somalia in need of emergency food aid is likely to rise to about 3.5m in the coming months, the United Nations has warned. Mark Bowden, the UN’s humanitarian co-ordinator for the region, says the food crisis is dramatically worsening.
